To provide information and encourage input, PPL Electric Utilities has hosted four public workshops for residents to learn about the projects. Our project team was on hand to provide information and answer questions.

First round of workshops:

Effort/Jonas/Sun Valley open house: April 13, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the West End Fire Company (Main Station), Route 715, Brodheadsville, PA.

Appenzell open house: April 20, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Reeders United Methodist Church, Church Road and Route 715, Reeders, PA 18352

Second round of workshops:

Strengthening the Electricity Delivery
System in Monroe County

PPL Electric Utilities is planning to strengthen the reliability of the electric delivery system in Monroe County, Pa.

As a part of this initiative, the company needs to build two new substations and related transmission lines in the Effort, Jonas and Sun Valley area and the Appenzell area.

These projects are a part of a broader program of infrastructure improvement planned by PPL Electric Utilities to ensure reliable electric service for local customers and for the region.

Effort/Jonas/Sun Valley area
In recent years, increasing demand for electricity in the Effort, Jonas and Sun Valley area has begun to push the local electric delivery system to its limits. As a result, power lines here are overloaded and this project is required to address the problem.

A new substation will provide a needed additional source of electricity for people in this area, and an additional transmission line is needed to connect that substation to the electricity grid.

Based on input we have received so far from the public - and in keeping with our goal of building this line in an environmentally sensitive manner - we have selected a route for the power line to serve the Effort/Jonas/Sun Valley area. This route is a modified version of Route B as originally proposed. It has been adjusted to be as responsive as possible to opinions expressed by property owners in the area.

Appenzell area
For a number of years, electricity reliability in this area has become progressively worse. This trend will continue without a new substation and transmission line. This project will improve the reliability of the local electricity delivery system by reducing the frequency and duration of power outages.

A new substation is needed to provide an additional source of electricity for people in this area, and an additional transmission line is needed to connect that substation to the electricity grid.

Two different possible routes were proposed for this power line, and PPL Electric Utilities held a public open house on April 20 to answer questions and solicit feedback. Based on feedback we received, and on our continuing environmental studies of the area, we have selected a modified version of Route A as the route for the power line that will serve the Appenzell area.

We incorporated community input into our decision as much as possible and made modifications to Route A to reflect this feedback.
