Appenzell
Project Timeline:
• First public open house held on April 20, 2009 to gather input from the public.
• PPL Electric Utilities announces line route June 3, 2009.
• Second open house scheduled for June 16, 2009, between the hours of 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Reeders United Methodist Church, Church Road and Route 715, Reeders.
• Beginning in spring 2009, PPL Electric Utilities will work with property owners to obtain necessary right of way for the transmission line route and will conduct a variety of environmental and engineering studies related to the project.
• The project will be submitted to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission for approval in early 2010.
• We anticipate that the PUC approval process will take about 12 months.
• After PUC approval, construction will begin on this project in spring 2011.
• PPL expects the new substation and transmission line to be in service by November 2011.

Appenzell Additional Details
A new substation is needed in the Appenzell area to provide an additional source of electricity for local customers and an additional transmission line is needed to connect that substation to the electrical grid.

This project will improve the reliability of the local electric delivery system by reducing the frequency and duration of power outages.

Project Details

  • The new substation will step down power from 138 kilovolts to 12 kilovolts so it can be sent to homes and businesses in the area.
  • The substation will be within a fenced area of 104 feet by 136 feet located on 2-3 acres of land.
  • The substation will contain one transformer and two lines; a control shed; and structures to support incoming transmission lines and new distribution lines.
  • PPL Electric Utilities plans to build 2 miles of new 138-kilovolt transmission line to connect the new substation to PPL’s existing Siegfried to Jackson 138-kilovolt transmission line.
  • The new steel poles will be between 95-105 feet high.

Detailed Description of Line Route
This proposed 2-mile route would connect to the existing 138-kilovolt Siegfried-Jackson transmission line, about 1.5 miles northeast of the village of McMichael, on the east side of Jackson Road.

The new 138-kilovolt transmission line would proceed southeast, paralleling Jackson Road for about 2,000 feet. At this point, the new transmission line would turn south,
crossing Price Drive and Mountain Road, and proceed for about 5,500 feet before crossing Mountain Road again, north of Frailey Road.

After turning southwest, the new transmission line would proceed for about 3,000 feet and cross Route 715 west of Mountain Road. The new transmission line would
then turn east and proceed for about 1,500 feet, generally paralleling Route 715 to the south.

The transmission line would end at a new substation that would be built southwest of the Route 715 and Miller Road intersection, about a half-mile from Appenzell.
